Liebe Community, liebe Allies,

mein Name ist Daniel und ich repräsentiere hier heute den AStA der THB.

Ich bin vor fast 2 Jahren hier zum Studium hergezogen und hatte Angst, dass ich als Schwuler im tiefen Osten nicht akzeptiert werde. Diese Angst wurde mir, jedenfalls innerhalb der Hochschule, direkt genommen, als ich in der Erstiwoche bei einem AStA Event war. Dort merkte ich, dass offen queere Menschen von allen Teilnehmern einfach dafür akzeptiert wurden, für die Menschen, die sie sind. Der AStA steht für eine Nulltoleranz gegen Sexismus, Rassismus und Homophobie.

Wir sind daher stolz viele queere Studierende im AStA zu haben. Ebenso stolz sind wir, unser Büro, sowie unsere Veranstaltungen Safe Spaces nennen zu können. Dieses Privileg ist bei weitem nicht selbstverständlich und das sind leider einige der wenigen Safe Spaces in unserer Stadt.

Das Angebot für queere Jugendliche ist jetzt schon ungenügend und wird von Parteien, wie der AfD noch weiter gefährdet. Aber andere Parteien in unserer Stadt scheinen trotzdem keine Berührungsängste mit ihr zu haben. So setzen sich CDU und Freie Wähler für eine Wiederwahl vom AfD Fraktionschef Axel Brösicke zum Vorsitzenden des Hauptausschusses der Stadtverordnetenversammlung ein. Das hört sich erstmal sehr langweilig und bürokratisch an, das ist aber leider ein wichtiges Organ, was über Dinge wie Finanzen, Bau und Personal in unserer Stadt entscheidet und somit direkt Einfluss auf das queere Stadtleben hat.

Der AStA steht grundsätzlich für Antifaschismus und demokratische Grundwerte, dies fordern wir auch von den Politikern. Damit die wenigen queeren Angebote, wie zum Beispiel der Queere Stammtisch, weiterhin existieren können, damit Safe Spaces, wie das Haus der Offiziere weiterhin von der Stadt unterstützt werden, damit Organisationen, wie die AG Queer von der Linken weiter für unsere Rechte und Angebote kämpfen können.

Antifaschismus ist für mich nicht nur wichtig, sondern essenziell für ein freies und queeres Brandenburg.

Als ich damals hierhergezogen bin, hatte ich Angst und hätte mir niemals vorstellen können diese Rede zu halten. Heute stehe ich hier auf einer Bühne und spreche vor euch. Das zeigt, wie viel Sichtbarkeit und Solidarität bewirken können. Aber nicht jede queere Person macht diese Erfahrung. Deshalb dürfen wir uns nicht darauf ausruhen, dass es an einigen Orten besser geworden ist. Wir müssen dafür sorgen, dass niemand Angst haben muss, sich zu zeigen, weder an beiden Hochschulen noch in der Innenstadt, im Verein oder zu Hause.

Deshalb: Seid laut, seid solidarisch und passt aufeinander auf. Vielen Dank für eure Aufmerksamkeit!

Dear Community, dear Allies,

My name is Daniel, and I’m here today representing the THB’s AStA.

I moved here almost two years ago to study, and I was afraid that, as a gay man, I wouldn’t be accepted in rural East-Germany. That fear was immediately put to rest, at least within the university, when I attended an AStA event during orientation week. There, I realized that openly queer people were simply accepted by all participants for who they are. The AStA stands for zero tolerance toward sexism, racism, and homophobia.

We are therefore proud to have many queer students in the AStA. We’re equally proud to be able to call our office and our events safe spaces. This privilege is by no means a given, and unfortunately, these are some of the few safe spaces in our city.

The clubs, events and activities available for queer youth is already insufficient and is being further jeopardized by parties like the AfD. Yet other parties in our city don’t seem to have any qualms about associating with them. For example, the CDU and the Freie Wähler are supporting the reelection of AfD faction leader Axel Brösicke as chair of the City Council’s “Hauptausschuss”, or main committee. At first glance, this sounds quite boring and bureaucratic, but unfortunately, it is an important body that makes decisions on matters such as finances, construction, and personnel in our city and thus has a direct impact on queer city life.

The AStA is fundamentally committed to anti-fascism and fundamental democratic values, and we demand the same from our politicians. So that the few queer initiatives, such as the “Queerer Stammtisch”, can continue to exist; so that safe spaces, such as the “Haus der Offiziere”, continue to receive support from the city; and so that organizations, such as the AG Queer of the party Die Linke, can continue to fight for our rights and offerings.

For me, anti-fascism is not just important, it is essential for a free and queer Brandenburg.

When I first moved here, I was afraid and could never have imagined giving this speech. Today, I stand here on a stage speaking to you. This shows how much visibility and solidarity can achieve. But not every queer person has this experience. That’s why we can’t rest on our laurels just because things have improved in some places. We must ensure that no one has to be afraid to be themselves, neither at either university nor in the city center, in clubs, or at home.

So: Be loud, show solidarity, and look out for one another. Thank you very much for listening!
